InsuranceVets recommend insurance because it allows us to practice to the type of quality medicine we were originally trained to provide according to needs not budget constraints. Different policies offer different levels of cover, some like RACQ or Suncorp may offer pet cover as an extension to house policy but are less comprehensive.

Parasite Control
There have been great advances in parasite control in terms of both spectrum of treatment and ease of treatment even for difficult to worm animals with spot ons available for many bugs. Nevertheless there is no one medication which can cover all the parasites in all the species so a combination of products is usually required. This is too large a topic to cover quickly here but examples might be Interceptor plus Advantix or Advocate plus a Kiltix tick collar etc. Recommendations may vary according to circumstances. For dogs heartworm and ticks are the most life threatening so it is good to build an effective combination around these. Note some medications cannot be used on cats. Ask our staff to tailor a total parasite control program to your needs.
Geriatric Medicine
Like humans age also tends to bring an increase in arthritis, kidney disease, dental disease , cognitive disorders and certain cancers. An annual health check or urine/ blood sample may be recommended to help detect these problems early. There are various medications and supplements which can help slow the deterioration and maintain both quality and quantity of life. Medicines exist to improve blood flow to the brain and kidneys while arthritis may benefit from a combination of nutritional supplements and prescribed anti-inflammatories. A quality diet rich in antioxidants and some regular meaty bones for teeth care will also help .Where anaesthetics are required (eg for dentistry) pre- anaesthetic blood profiling and use of intravenous fluids and fast acting anaesthetics can further minimize any risk. Our petshop stocks a range of effective nutritional supplements.
Holidaying with Pets
For travelling dogs a pet car restraint is recommended for owner and pet safety-dogs make heavy projectiles. Alternately, a collapsible crate is ideal and makes a dog home away from home.Sedation can be provided by the vet if required on prescription. A few herbal medications like valerian or “Homeopet–Anxiety”may also help calm stressed travellers. Ginger( biscuits) are good for motion car sickness dogs. The DAP and Feliway pheromone spray diffusers are also great to help calm travelling pets and adjust to new surroundings. If travelling into tick areas or camping pay extra attention to tick prevention. Advantix for dogs also repells biting insects.
